Positive Parenting Skills – How to be a Good Parent

Every mother and father is concerned about parenting issues and probably, wants to learn positive parenting skills. Every parent wants his or her kid to grow healthy and happy without any fear of life. Our children need our support in their creative activities and relationships. However, we all complain that we are busy and have no time for it. Nevertheless, our kids still need our support. Here are some tips to overcome that issue.

First of all, the key concept of positive parenting is the ability to find a good side in any situation, no matter how bad it looks at first. It is important not to lose sense of humor and good attitude. Here is an example: my mother was very anxious while we were cooking dinner. She always likes to complain. However, before we all immersed in her worries, I decided to sing a song.

I was quietly singing a song. Interestingly enough, we all started singing that song. We all enjoyed it. Everyone was smiling.

The moral of the story is that any situation is fine, no matter how hard it is. You can always find a bright side of it. For example, music and song are powerful things to change your mood and your attitude towards the situation. Believe me, every situation has a seed of brightness in it. That’s why in positive parenting approach, you as a parent try to find a positive side in any possible situation. I don’t have to convince you, it’s really hard thing to do but it’s still doable.

Let’s take another example. Let’s say you are traveling with your two kids. One of your kids wants to stop to take a break and eat something. But another kid wants something completely different. Very soon they start the quarrel. Suddenly they start to fight. What should parent do in this situation? How to you resolve such situation without taking the side one of your child?

The answer is that positive parent must be neutral, but at the same time, accepting the situation. A parent must understand both sides. Both children have their own views of the situation. And none of them wrong in seeing it the way the way he sees. Therefore this fight presents you an opportunity to practice your positive parenting skills.

Every time such situation appears, remind yourself that it’s your teacher. Instead of resisting the circumstances, accept it completely. Be thankful for a good opportunity to grow and become more capable in accepting it. This is the time when you can practice your skills as a positive parent.

Actually kids often fight, and it’s not a problem until we see it as a problem. We even don’t need to call this phenomenon as a fight. Once the events starts, call it “positive parenting skills training opportunity”, and quickly change your attitude towards the situation.

It is you who makes up a positive parent. It all depends on how you see yourself in the given situation. To rephrase a saying: “be the parent you always wanted your parent had been”. It is really helpful. It will change all your actions.

Since as parents we always need to take action. For the given example, you are the one who decides what to do next. Your kids will look at you to resolve their fight. Since, they always expect it. Therefore you must be free from their fight and arguments to be able to come up with the best answer.

However, keeping neutrality doesn’t mean not listening to your kids. Listen what they have to say to you. Keep asking questions. Make sure that everyone is heard. It is important for them to feel that you have acknowledged their points of view. It is even better if you could get you children to listen to each other.

You can help them much better if you are centered inside yourself.  You don’t need to take their arguments too seriously, though.

Our kids learn from our examples. The more you are centered, the quicker the quarrel stops. At that time, you really learn to enjoy the ride using your positive parenting skills.
